Some say, it’s the “Most Overrated Holiday in the World”, well this year, for most in this part of the world, Valentine’s Day is not a holiday, it is a Major Work Day.

It’s a long tradition that an average person who has a spouse, a “bae” or dare we say “baes”, buys or expects romantic dinners, bouquets of roses, boxes of chocolate, teddy bears, greeting cards, jewelleries, gadgets, tech items and the list goes on. This is strongly tied to the myth of Valentine’s Day being a day reserved for couples, married or not married leaving single people out of the discussion.

The ideal Valentine’s Day should be an opportunity to stop and give yourself or/and the people you love some much-needed love/appreciation. Though an uncommon concept, Valentine’s Day is the perfect excuse to get yourself the gift of self-care. The difference being that people who may have bought a gift for someone else will buy two (2) to accommodate themselves, and others who would not have expected a gift from anyone now have a gift for themselves, spreading the love to everyone and doubling the current number of gifts purchased during the love season.

To understand a bit of giftings that happen yearly on St Valentine’s Day, it is estimated that over a billion cards are exchanged on Valentine’s Day and an average of 200,000 wedding proposals are made on Valentine’s Day. So, we can imagine the movement in terms of transits that happen to make this a reality.

This year, Valentine’s Day falls on a Wednesday, which is a work day for many. One will expect a reduction in Movements/Activities within the season, but some may argue that it changes little. Looking from a different perspective, activities are likely to increase rather than reduce. We will witness a spread of activities from Wednesday to Sunday rather than just Wednesday only. These activities will not happen without an increase in movement, as people will need to transit from one location to the other.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) recorded that about 27 percent of road crashes recorded across the country between 2008 and 2011 occurred during Valentine’s Day celebrations in the month of February. Following this the Corps appealed to fun seekers to ensure strict compliance with traffic rules and regulations to avoid road crashes.

As the saying goes, what you love, you protect. You should endeavour to protect yourself and bae as you commute on this special day. It is important to take simple steps to ensure your safety. Steps such as drinking responsibly, ensuring someone takes you home after a drinking binge, having a romantic dinner at home rather than going out and avoiding night travels.
